Video details Great Lakes governors’ protection efforts

The fund has committed more than $63.9 million to 245 projects to advance conservation, produce sustainable technologies and restore ecosystems in an economically viable way.

The Great Lakes have some of world’s most concentrated plastic pollution

Plastic pollutants circulate in pockets of the Great Lakes at concentrations higher than any other body of water on Earth, according to a recent State University of New York study.

The study is the first to look at plastic pollutants in the Great Lakes. It is part of a larger global endeavor to understand the origin and prevalence of plastic pollution in water and was conducted with the Los Angeles-based 5 Gyres Institute.

Algae biofuel not sustainable now-U.S. research council

Biofuels made from algae, promoted by President Barack Obama as a possible way to help wean Americans off foreign oil, cannot be made now on a large scale without using unsustainable amounts of energy, water and fertilizer, the U.S. National Research Council reported on Wednesday.

Green moves from ground to rooftop

Used to promising customers green grass, MRW Lawns in La Plata has greened something else — its roof.

Planted with hardy vegetation, the “green” roof of the company’s office is the only one of its kind in Charles County, company officials said. The technology helps capture rainwater and keep the building cool in summer, people involved in the project said.
