2012 Pollution Prevention Conference and Trade Show Call for Presentations

The Indiana Partners for Pollution Prevention invite you to submit a proposal for the 15th Annual Pollution Prevention Conference and Trade Show to be held on September 19, 2012, at Primo West Banquet & Conference Center in Plainfield, Indiana. Organizations that typically attend the annual conference include manufacturers, consultants, not-for-profits, and government agencies invested in promoting pollution prevention efforts in Indiana.

The Conference Planning Committee is seeking presentations from local and national speakers regarding pollution prevention, resource conservation, sustainability, wastewater management, and environmental stewardship. The committee is particularly interested in presentations that highlight specific success stories and/or outline methods and strategies that conference attendees can take back to their organizations for potential implementation. Approval for Wastewater Operator/Apprentice Continuing Education Units (CEU) will be sought, and a portion of the proposals accepted for this conference will have a technical focus on wastewater topics.

The Conference Planning Committee reserves the right to accept or reject proposals. Submission of a proposal does not guarantee participation in the conference program. All submissions must be received by 5:00 p.m. (EST) on February 24, 2012. See instructions below for submitting proposals. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Harrington at sharring@idem.IN.gov or (317)233-9339.

Selection Criteria

Session proposals will be reviewed by the Conference Planning Committee for content, presenter’s experience, session description, and how well they meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate well-defined topics with focused objectives.
  • Introduce innovative programs and services that organizations can implement.
  • Inspire and motivate attendees to make positive changes that focus on pollution prevention within their organizations.
  • Share case studies, new technologies, and best management practices for pollution prevention.
  • Demonstrate how pollution prevention focused programs, processes, and/or practices improve human health and the environment.

Please note the following definition of pollution prevention. Presentations that focus solely on recycling will not be considered.

Pollution prevention (P2) means working at the source of pollutants to prevent them from being generated or to reduce the amount generated. It is using materials and energy more efficiently, and conserving natural resources, including water. It is following best management practices, and involving all employees in their implementation, to reduce and prevent pollution. Finally, P2 means also seeing the financial benefits of increased efficiency in the use of raw materials, energy, water or other resources.

Soy-Based Adhesives Provide Formaldehyde-Free Alternative for Interior Wood Products

Download the document.

While soy-based adhesives have been used in the manufacturing of wood products such as plywood for more than 70 years, environmental concerns and rising costs for petrochemical-based resins have renewed interest in these less toxic and more sustainable options. Consequently, Ashland Hercules Water Technologies’ development of a completely formulated soy adhesive for use in wood composites, including particleboard and medium density fiberboard, presents furniture manufacturers and consumers with a safer alternative for adhesives used in producing interior furniture.
