Electronic waste: EU adopts new WEEE law

The European Parliament has passed a new law to curb dumping of electronic goods such as mobile phones, computers and TV sets in landfill sites.

From 2016 EU member states will have to collect 45 tonnes of e-waste for every 100 tonnes of electronic goods put on sale during the previous three years.

By 2019 the target must rise to 65 tonnes, or member states can opt to collect 85% of total e-waste generated.

EU officials say only about one-third of e-waste is treated appropriately.

The Clorox Company today launched its new Ingredients Inside smartphone application and mobile website. Now smartphone users have immediate access to information about Clorox ingredients for their household and commercial disinfecting, cleaning and laundry products in the U.S. and Canada.

The first consumer packaged goods company to launch a smartphone application for ingredient disclosure, Clorox is offering the app initially to iPhone(R) users, enabling them to scan a product UPC code and be taken instantly to that product’s ingredient listing. In addition, a new mobile website ( http://i.clx.com ), which is available for all mobile platforms, gives easier, on-the-go access to the company’s Ingredients Inside program by offering content and functionality optimized for mobile device use….

The Clorox Company’s Ingredients Inside program now also features an application programming interface (API) that allows developers working on product ingredient programs to easily access the company’s ingredient data.

Business going green: Companies save money employing pollution prevention engineering interns

A small University of Missouri program is producing some large savings for Missouri businesses. In just four summers, the Pollution Prevention (P2) program and its interns have identified more than $1 million in energy and environmental savings. Most recommendations have a payback in less than three years.

The P2 intern program, a partnership between MU Extension’s Small Business and Technology Development Centers and the MU College of Engineering, teaches students pollution prevention principals, practices and tools through an applied engineering course. The best students are matched with businesses and municipalities across the state for a summer job that identifies and measures environmental improvements and cost reductions. .

A Three-Part Approach to Corporate Sustainability

Sustainable development is a vast and all-encompassing idea, and corporate sustainability is nearly so. No corporate sustainability leader can hope to make their company “sustainable” in the next year—or even the next five. So as we think ahead to our sustainability initiatives for 2012, how can we set meaningful goals that will lead to measurable good?

As a fairly new corporate sustainability leader, I find that answering this question can easily become overwhelming. So, I use a three-part approach to help develop and further my company’s sustainability strategy.

In fact, according to Jon Foley, director of the University of Minnesota’s Institute of the Environment, making agriculture more productive and more sustainable is probably the single biggest environmental challenge of the 21st century.

Foley laid out his case during the first One Great Idea session at the GreenBiz Forum in Minneapolis, the first of three one-day events digging in to the findings of the State of Green Business Report, published this week by GreenBiz Group.

Sick of work? New research suggests office environments more toxic than we thought

There are a host of chemicals found in the typical office environment that may cause long-term health issues.
new study from the journal Environmental Science and Technology reports that office air contains toxic chemicals released from carpeting, paint, furniture glues, water repellents and coverings, and other sources. The polyfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a group of chemicals that build up in the body over time, and can take years for the body to metabolize and eliminate.
